Attractions and Amenities
Located in NW DC, Shaw is a neighborhood filled with history and its own unique culture. Much of DC’s African-American history is found in Shaw, with Howard University being a prominent establishment in the neighborhood. During the late 1960’s, riots throughout the city brought Shaw and many of the surrounding neighborhoods to an economic decline. Now however, the U St corridor is one of the city’s most popular destinations on a weekend night. With numerous bars, clubs, and event halls; the U St corridor of Shaw is DC night life at its finest. Ben’s Chili Bowl on U St might be DC’s most famous restaurant, with hundreds of celebrities and politicians having stopped in for a bite over the years. In recent years a heavy influx of Ethiopian restaurants has emerged, leading some to call the 9th St block of U St “Little Ethiopia.” Both the U St and Shaw/Howard University metro stops service the area, so transportation is never an issue.
